At Bell Aliant, we focus our community relations program on having a positive impact on the lives of children and youth in our region. One of the initiatives we proudly sponsor relates to both anti-bullying and literacy issues.
In 2003, R.J. MacNeil, an Aliant employee from Sydney, Nova Scotia, wrote a book called Bobo the Bully. This book grew from a partnership between Aliant and the Halifax Regional Municipality, Cape Breton, New Glasgow and Kentville police departments to help fight bullying problems.BoBo the Bully was first published in 2003 and distributed to schools in Halifax. The book tells the story of a bully who has no friends because they do not want to hang around with somebody who does not respect others.
Bell Aliant later expanded this commitment translating the book into French, Bobo maitre de menances and subsequently Mi’kmaq, Jo’jo na Bully. To date, more than 4,000 books have been distributed to school children throughout Atlantic Canada.
Schools and not-for-profit organizations can now request copies of Bell Aliant’s three anti-bullying books online. Every effort will be made to send the requested number of books, but due to the popularity of this initiative, there may be delays in receiving books requested on short notice.
