Fibre-to-the-node (FTTN): Fibre optic cable (fibre) permits digital data transmission over longer distances and at higher data rates than other forms of wired and wireless communications. FTTN is a broadband architecture that provides high-speed Internet and other video services to the customer’s home by deploying fibre cable and DSL equipment within close proximity of the customer. This proximity allows us to increase the speed of our Internet service and provide IPTV to customers within the FTTN serving area.

Forbearance: Forbearance can be thought of as a form of deregulation, which removes the bulk of economic regulation. For local exchange service, it is granted by the CRTC on an exchange-by-exchange basis. Forbearance provides us much more flexibility to respond to the market in areas where competitive services are available. For example, in areas where forbearance of local service is granted, we no longer need to file cost studies and obtain prior CRTC approval to change our service features
or prices for basic telephone service and enhanced options, such as call display. However, an overall price cap remains on standalone basic residential service.

High-speed Internet (broadband): The volume of information that can be transmitted through a cable or fibre at any one time is measured in bandwidth. Broadband has the capability to carry large amounts of information enabling us to deliver new products and services to our customers.

ICT: Information and communications technology (ICT) refers to the convergence of the information technology (IT) and telecommunications industries. This convergence has evolved as a result of the natural merging of telephony (voice) and IT (data) systems – evident, for example, in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.

ILEC / SILEC / CLEC: An incumbent local exchange carrier or ILEC is a telephone company that held the local monopoly on telephone services before the introduction of local competition. A SILEC is a
small incumbent local exchange carrier. A competitive local exchange carrier or CLEC is a facilities-based provider that competes with the established local telephone company.

Income trust: An income trust is a legal ownership structure for a business that holds income-producing assets. Similar to common stocks, trust units trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Income trusts are tax efficient structures that typically generate consistent cash flow for unitholders. A large proportion of a trust’s income is passed on to unitholders through monthly or quarterly distributions, which are typically higher than stock dividends.

VoIP allows service providers to deliver to businesses and consumers advanced multimedia applications and IP-based voice services, dramatically enhancing their communications experience.

Wi-Fi hotspots: Wi-Fi, or wireless fidelity, is a technology used to connect to the Internet or transmit data at high speed over wireless local area networks. A hotspot is generally found in high-traffic
public areas, such as airports, hotels, conference centres or restaurants. Customers can gain high-speed wireless Internet access simply by launching a Web browser on a laptop or handheld device that is Wi-Fi enabled. Some hotspots require authentication or are on a pay-per-use basis.
